Plus-size High-fashion Designer Finds Retailers Still Hesitant - Cbs News

Last year her revenue was upward of $1 million. Her dresses costs about $125 on average. "This is a customer that's vocal and she knows what she wants and she's not hiding behind the black and the brown and the slimming," Clarke said. That customer includes about 64 percent of American women who fall into the plus-size category, but account for only 17 percent of purchases. While more of them are appearing in ad campaigns, red carpets and even the Sports Illustrated Swimsuit edition , experts say plus-sized women are still viewed as having negative perceptions about their bodies. "Culturally they've been made to feel like they shouldn't splurge on themselves because all they need to do is http://www.chicemma.com lose that 20 pounds and then 'Aren't you going to wish that you'd waited until you bought that?'" New York Times style editor Katherine Rosman said. But at photo shoots for Plus Model Magazine, the opposite is true.

Solange Had No Words for ?Fashion Police,? but Her Flip of the Hair Spoke Volumes - Yahoo News

On "E! News" Tuesday, Rancic said the reaction to her comments has increased her awareness of, in her words, "cliches and stereotypes." They are damaging, she said, adding that she and others have the responsibility to avoid perpetuating them. During Monday's "Fashion Police" on the E! channel, Rancic said that Zendaya's hair suggested the smell of patchouli oil or marijuana. Her "E! News" remarks went beyond an apology tweet in which Rancic said her references had nothing to do with race.

Fashion show to benefit Soroptimist programs, Vista Maria - thenewsherald.com

The E! talk show isn't the only media outlet guilty of ridiculing the singer for her natural hair , she said.In Touch Weekly"compared it to a dog," she tweeted. In a column last year about pets that resemble celebrities, the gossip magazine reportedly ran a photo of a reader's Yorkshire terrierpoodle mix side by side with a photo of Knowles. "Basically twinsies" was the snarky caption. "What can I say?" tweeted Knowles. Turns out, GIFs speak louder than words. She shrugged off the natural hair haters with one dramatic shake of her voluminous, wavy tresses, captured in a GIF that's been retweeted nearly 20,000 times. Knowles' digital flip of the hair (subbing, perhaps, for her middle finger) came in response to Fashion Police remarks that Zendaya's hair on the Oscar red carpet Sunday night must have smelled like "patchouli oil" or "weed." Zendaya later posted to Instagram that she thought the comments were "not only a large stereotype but outrageously offensive." Zendaya accepted Rancic's apology in a tweet Wednesday morning, writing: "Body shaming and other hurtful tactics will never get the job done." She ended with a quote from Martin Luther King Jr.: "Darkness cannot drive out darkness, only light can do that.

Inditex bans angora wool products - Feb. 10, 2015

One of the world's biggest fashion firms has banned the sale of angora wool after activists highlighted the cruel treatment of rabbits by farms in China. Inditex, which owns Zara, Massimo Dutti and Bershka, said it would stop selling angora garments in all of its 6,400 shops after facing months of pressure from animal rights campaigners. One campaign against angora wool showed videos of live rabbits screaming while fur is pulled from their skins on Chinese farms. The footage, obtained by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) at 10 farms in China, also showed rabbits being stretched on boards and cut as their fur is hacked off.

Haute Couture Fashion Week: Christian Dior - Yahoo News

A crowd of celebrities came out to view Raf Simons' latest collection, which has a distinctly retro feel. On a giant platform outside the Parisian museum today, models showcased the 1960s-inspired looks of the Christian Dior Spring-Summer 2015 haute couture collection. The designer chose to play with contrasting volumes, namely in long, loose and transparent trench coats worn over embroidered mini-dresses. Flared skirts also made a strong showing, echoing the French fashion house's signature design codes. Colorful stripe motifs are a recurring theme in the collection, along with other groovy geometric prints seen in jumpsuits, bodysuits and dresses. As usual at Dior, flowers in the mix too, either in prints or in intricate embroidery. Combining the retro with the modern, the show also paired a number of go-go style mini-dresses with ultra-chic latex boots (ankle or thigh-high) in black, green, red and even orange . Fashion

Haute couture fashion week: Schiaparelli - Yahoo News

Created in the absence of the Italian designer's leadership, the Spring-Summer 2015 collection is a collaborative effort from the entire Schiaparelli design team. While Versace chose to play up feminine curves in sensual, close-fitting gowns, Schiaparelli presented only a couple of tight dresses. Instead, the focus in this collection is on ample tailoring and fluid fabrics, with a particular emphasis on wide-legged pants. The waists are typically worn high, sometimes even just above the chest. The fashion house's signature design codes are well represented, as seen in the wide and prominent shoulders in a number of looks. The prints are abstract, with loads of flashy colors (green, red, orange), a few darker shades (midnight blue, brown, pastel blue, black, white) and shimmery accents.

Fashion hits and misses on the Golden Globes red carpet | Breaking News | providencejournal.com | The Providence Journal

Among the well-dressed: Amal Clooney, whose sleek black Dior Haute Couture dress and elbow-length white gloves begged the question: George who?; Diane Kruger in a fit-and-flare silver Emilia Wickstead confection; and Viola Davis in a red Donna Karan Atelier strapless gown with a sequined bodice. Following on the crimson path, Allison Williams was um, I cant decide. in sparkling strapless red Armani Prive. The gown is either a thing of wonder or a giant, fabric Christmas ornament. Lupita Nyongo, usually fashion-flawless, wore a violet and white Giambattista Valli gown that overpowered her small frame. The fashion fails were, of course, the most interesting part of the red carpet. Naomi Watts didnt get the Nobody Looks Good in Yellow memo; the corso como shoes cut of her Gucci gown was lovely, but the color was unfortunate.

Highs and lows in fashion from the Golden Globes - Yahoo News

And there was plenty for us to love or hate, including a daring white Vera Wang Collection gown for "Gone Girl" co-star Rosamund Pike. She showed off midriff cutouts, a strappy barely there back and plunging neckline soon after giving birth. The look was criticized by some as ill-fitting at the top but lauded by Aya Kanai, executive fashion director of Cosmopolitan and Seventeen, as "white hot and sexy." A chartreuse Gucci column gown worn by Naomi Watts with a knockout diamond Bulgari Serpenti necklace was a questionable color to others while she was lauded as a vision by Joyann King, editor of HarpersBazaar.com. "I love how she took the classic Old Hollywood glamour equation memorable hue, over-the-top jewels, red lip and Veronica Lake curls and made it completely relevant on today's modern carpet," King said. Ruth Wilson of "The Affair" stood alone in green, an edgy form-fitting Prada with a high neck and black-and-turquoise detailing. Other highs and lows: JESSICA CHASTAIN: The "A Most Violent Year" actress said it best of her ultra-shiny, plunging Atelier Versace: "My movie is about heating oil.

One Man's Trash, Another Man's Fashion Brand : NPR

"ECOALF is one of the very few [sustainable fashion] brands which are, style-wise, very mass-market compatible. This is a very big advantage," says German fashion designer Magdalena Schaffrin. The Global Afterlife Of Your Donated Clothes But the company's products don't come cheap; $250 for a coat and $105 for a pair of shoes are not quite mass-market affordable. And that's likely to be ECOALF's major challenge as it grows. Esben Rahbek Gjerdrum Pedersen, director of the Center for Corporate Social Responsibility at the Copenhagen Business School, says that most consumers look first at quality, price and convenience, where ECOALF has to compete to be mainstream.

Fashion Blogger Rumi Neely Launches Her Own Clothing Line - Yahoo News

"Blogging gave me access to the fashion world that I had only dreamed about having, and has done so much for training my eye," says Neely, who initially launched her blog alongside her eBay vintage store, Treasure Chest Vintage, in 2008. "The things I look out for when looking at clothes are so crazily specific now that it really was a very natural thing to start conceptualizing my own line." Neelys influences for the line run the gamut, from Japanese fashion magazines to "scruffy French actresses," she says, as well as her own native Southern California. "L.A. gets such a bad rap for basically not even caring about fashion but that's completely not my perspective. I love the laid back feeling, the emphasis on dressing down just makes it moreimportant to really have that perfect t-shirt or pajama-ish short.I've lived in a fewdifferent parts of California and they've really all had a part in influencing my normal." Personal favorites from the line include the Kaede shorts ($280), the Zillah slipdress ($300) just cause it's hot, and the Ceven tank ("It's the easiest thing to just throw on and I love the low-cut sides," the blogger notes of the $90 piece). Prior to launching Are You Am I, Neely has already cut her fashion teeth in collaborations with lines including The Reformation and Dannijo, and in modeling campaigns for Free People, RVCA and Forever 21.

By Merle Ginsberg 5 hours ago Content preferences Done It was a rumor that swept Europe this summer, but now Page Six is reporting that Gucci's top couple, CEO Patrizio di Marco and creative director Frida Giannini, who have a daughter together ,will exit their posts imminently. The Post also reports sales at the global brand have been stagnant, and Michele Sofisti, the CEO of Gucci's watches and jewelry division, left the company last week. In October, Gucci posted its weakest quarterly growth in four years, withoverexpansion in China being pointed to as one reason. Rumors abounded in Europe about this over the past summer, with names being floated as possible new Gucci creative directors. One name heard often and loudly was Givenchy's Riccardo Tisci, who has been considered one of fashion's top talents for years and, we hear, has been at least approached for the position. Earlier this week, Tisci announced Julia Roberts as Givenchy's new face. Gucci hasn't yet responded to requests for comment.

Newest Condé fashion mag goes out of ?Style? | New York Post

Hugo Boss said late on Thursday that Permira, the group's largest shareholder, had started placing a 7 percent stake via an accelerated bookbuilding procedure. A person familiar with the transaction said that UBS (UBSN.S) was running the placement, seeking buyers at a price of 102 euros per share, which would make it a 500 million euro (394.31 million pounds) deal. That compares with a closing price earlier on Thursday of 105.45 euros. The investment bank declined to comment. A source familiar with the matter told Reuters in September, shortly after Permira sold an 11 percent stake in Hugo Boss, that the buyout firm would hive off more shares in the fashion company. Permira agreed to a three-month lockup period for its remaining shares, Hugo Boss said in its statement. Permira spent 5.3 billion euros on a controlling stake in Hugo Boss in 2007, installing Claus-Dietrich Lahrs as chief executive, who has overseen the Hugo Boss stock quadruple in value since then.

A spokeswoman for Style.com confirmed the news that the magazine portion was suspending publication. Since the relaunch in early September, the site continues to exceed growth expectations, she said. To continue that momentum, weve made the decision to focus 100% of our efforts on our core digital business. Dirk Standen, the editor-in-chief of Style.com, was recently made to report to Vogue EIC Anna Wintour, according to a report in WWD on Thursday. And Style.com publisher Matt Rice, who once reported to Conde Nast president Bob Sauerberg, is now reporting to Vogue publisher Susan Plagemann, WWD said. Standen and Rice could not be reached for comment. Sources tell Media Ink that it was a decision by Wintour, who is artistic director for all Conde titles, to pull the plug on the magazine because she felt it replicated a lot of what the flagship was doing.

From Ferragamo to Missoni, sneakers tread a trend - Yahoo News

The vehicle ran into the Forever 21 store in Manhattan's Herald Square around 10 online p.m., the New York Fire Department said, adding that seven people were taken to a nearby hospital, one with minor injuries and six in serious condition. Television news station CBS New York broadcast footage of the smashed Ford Mustang beside a shattered window of the apparel retailer. The car ran into several other vehicles and hit pedestrians before crashing into the building, the broadcaster said. "She must have freaked out," a witness, Matty Thomas, told CBS New York, describing the driver of the car. "She backed up, took off, went around on the other side of the street, went through the intersection, skidded out, fishtailed, then fishtailed again the other way and smacked into all the cars waiting at the light on that side of the street." Police, reached by telephone, declined to give details of the incident, or to say if the driver would face charges.

Night Event With Booze At U.n. Plaza: What Could Go Wrong? - Sfgate

Officials, however, warned residents not to become complacent amid massive doses of wind and rain, scattered debris and power outages, and uncertainty over the pathway of a bigger storm hurtling toward them. View gallery (L-R) Hurricane Genevieve, Hurricane Iselle and Hurricane Julio are pictured in this August 5, 2014 "Next on tap is Hurricane Julio, which still is packing winds of about 100 mph (161 kph)," said National Weather Service meteorologist Mike Cantin. "Right now our guidance is indicating it's going to go north (of the state), but that can change and folks need to keep on guard." State officials also gave the all-clear for a Democratic primary election to proceed as scheduled on Saturday. All but two polling stations on the hardest-hit east coast of the Big Island would be open, they said. As Iselle passed over the Big Island with winds of up to 50 mph (80 kph) and pummeled eastern areas from Puna to Hilo with heavy rains, some 2,000 people had hunkered down in evacuation shelters across the state. Later in the day, that figure was reduced to about 900 people as many evacuees returned to their homes, said an American Red Cross spokeswoman. At one point, 23,000 people were left without power on the Big Island and Maui.

Iselle lashes Hawaii with wind, rain as Julio threatens - Yahoo News

The plan is for it to continue every Friday between 4 p.m. and 9 p.m. through Oct. 24. The theory is that with all the techies moving into the Mid-Market area to work and live, an outdoor food truck-beer garden-live music venue will, to use the current buzz phrase, "activate the civic space." "There are night markets all over the world," said Department of Public Works Director Mohammed Nuru. "The Night Market will liven up the center of our city with lights, music, food, merchants and, above all, people." That sounds optimistic, but Carolyn Diamond, executive director of the Market Street Association, says the reaction has been surprisingly positive. 'Good luck with that' "I've had some people say, 'Good luck with that,' " she admitted.

Jennifer Aniston Opens Up on Aging, Style, & Perfect Hair - Yahoo Sports

BB: view site... My husband is the same way. When I feel that I am not looking as young and fresh as I likeusually after a night of tequila and breadI will put extra moisturizer and face oil on my skin so that whatever lines are in my face look better. It is just about being hydrated; that has been my secret. JA: Well, thats true, its hydration, and there are also so many things that women can do today with technology in terms of LED light therapy, good lasers that tighten the muscles, and massages for your faceand dont forget great creams. I think thats the route to go. I also understand that age is kind of awesome. I am fortunate enough to know women like Gloria Steinem, who I think is one of the most stunning women on the planet, and doesnt touch her face.
